Ongoing Project ProfilesSupport to the IDLG Initiatives in Maidan-Wardak ProvinceThe Independent Directorate for Local Governance (IDLG) with logistical support from WADAN and funding from The Asia Foundation has taken initial steps toward collective action – for the government to deliver timely and effective services and for the people to assume a responsible attitude towards district-based decisions in response to their problems. This creates reciprocated recognition and trust that will ultimately become sustainable at the district levels. The prime objective of this project is to win the hearts and minds of the local people through their representatives to promote security, national unity, development, peaceful conflict resolution, and build bridges between their communities and the government. The specific objectives of this project are to promote human rights, transitional justice, democracy, development and peace in Maidan Wardak province. Community-based approaches to strengthen security and access to public facilities, enlargement of livelihood options and reciprocal actions for government demands will gradually produce durable results imperative for stability in the long run. However, the situation in Afghanistan and the well being of the community will not experience lasting improvement until the Government and the people are capable of responsibly addressing broader social, economic, governance and security issues affecting the country. In December 2007, the Independent Directorate for Local Governance (IDLG) with the logistical support from WADAN commenced the creation of local councils in Maidan-Wardak province to strengthen the relationship between the government and the people. The program aims to mentor good governance, promote security and encourage development. |
