Ongoing Project ProfilesOutreach/Drop-in Center (ODIC) for Drug Addicts in Ghazni ProvinceFollowing meetings of the Ministry of Counter Narcotics (MCN), Afghanistan and UNHCR and subsequently the UNODC Kabul office with existing drug control implementing organizations in Kabul, as well with affirmation from the MCN regarding the successful implementation of the Outreach and Drop-In Center in Logar Province, WADAN was chosen to undertake drug control activities in Ghazni province where the issue of drug addiction among the returning Afghan refugees from Iran is a matter of great concern, especially the local directorate of public health. Since its establishment in May 2006 through April 2010, this center has referred 272 drug addicts to residential drug treatment programs run by either WADAN or other NGOs in the nearby provinces of Paktia, Maidan-Wardak and Kabul provinces following completion of motivational counseling. The women’s drug treatment center in Kabul, Sanga Amaj of SSAWO, accepts women for residential drug treatment referred by this ODIC from Ghazni Province. Home-based drug treatment was provided to 333 women at the community level. Family therapy was provided to around 995 co-dependents. Anti drug awareness gatherings were organized where around 2,238 people learned about the social, health, and economic consequences of drug use. Aftercare and follow up, vital components of the center’s activities are practiced regularly. Social and medical first aid as complementary services of the center work are provided to all clients who visit the center. The initial seven months contract with UNHCR came to end in December 9 2007. Fortunately, the UNODC responded to the intense need for such services as requested by the families of drug addicts and the local department of public health and funded the center until November 9, 2007. In December 2009, after a break in funding, through which WADAN used its own resources to ensure service provision, UNODC resumed funding for another five months. This is WADAN’s second project with UNODC/UNHCR. Updated On: May 3, 2010 |
