Ongoing Project ProfilesDrug Treatment and Rehabilitation Center in Lashkargah City, Helmand Province![]() This drug treatment and rehabilitation center is a 20-bed residential facility that provides comprehensive drug treatment and rehabilitation services to drug addicts mainly from Helmand and on the occasional basis from adjacent provinces. The center also provides home-based drug treatment and drug education to drug addicts with a particular focus on home-based treatment for women. This is the fourth project WADAN received from INL/CPDAP. Established in October 2006, the center has through April 30, 2010 served 2,166 male and female drug addicts at both its residential and home-based outreach programs. The center has also created awareness about the negative effects of illicit drugs to approximately 3,910 social multipliers: students, teachers, farmers, local leaders, mullahs, local government officials, and law enforcement agencies. Since April, 2009, funding for this project has come from the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Bureau of the United States of America (INL) through the Drug Advisory Program of the Colombo Plan-CPDAP. Initially, it was the Commonwealth and Foreign Office of the United Kingdom, who provided funding for this project from May 2006 through March, 2009. This center offers comprehensive services, including a vocational training component as occupational therapy wherein recovering addicts learn various employable skills that help in minimizing relapse. Until April 30, 2010, 1,190 (mostly women) patients have been trained in these skills following treatment and primary rehabilitation for drug abuse. Updated on: May 3, 2010 |
