History

Established in August 2002, the Welfare Association for the Development of Afghanistan (WADAN) is an active and effective Afghan NGO. WADAN is an indigenous, nonprofit, nongovernmental organization with accreditation from the government of Afghanistan and the Afghan NGOs Coordination Bureau (ANCB) to undertake community and institutional development, civic education, and drug control initiatives. We are based in Kabul and have regional offices in Jalalabad, Kunduz, Kandahar, Herat, Mazar, Bamyan, Gardez, Helmand, Ghazni and Logar. With full-time and part-time staff, approximately 250 people are employed.

WADAN respects the laws of the government and the culture and traditions of Afghanistan’s communities and exists primarily to build the capacity of Afghan citizens toward the establishment of a healthy, functional, Afghan democracy. We envision a peaceful, drug free, democratic and developed Afghanistan. Our mission is to advance the spread of democratic principles, sustainable development, social justice, human rights, and freedom in Afghanistan.

Our aims are to foster peace and stability, national unity, human rights and drug control by strengthening and empowering communities. We are dedicated to supporting the needs and interests of Afghans, inclusive of all ethnic and linguistic groups and we recognize the central role that community plays in the structure of society. In our activities we initiate innovative ways to improve the quality of life in the broad community: local, national and international.

WADAN has received repeated funding for its initiatives from the Embassy of Great Britain (direct and some through the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Technische Zusammenarbeit (German Foreign Aid or GTZ), the Embassy of Japan, the Department for International Development (DFID) through the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) of Helmand, the Save the Children - Sweden/Norway, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and the International Republican Institute (IRI), the Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), U.S Department of State through the Colombo Plan, Counterpart International Initiative to Promote Afghan Civil Society (IPAC-S), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through Associates in Rural Development (ARD), the Ministry of Counter Narcotics of Afghanistan, United Nations Agencies and Voice For Humanity (VFH).
